Is there anything new coming out from Volvo?

Gary Jaffarian explains that the 2018 XC60 and S90 are the newest models with amazing safety features and technology, not yet seen in any other vehicle, including semi-autonomous driving.

We are very excited about the new 2018 XC60 which arrives this fall. It looks like a miniaturized, more athletic version of the XC90.

The drivetrain is available in 3different models: a 250-horsepower, turbocharged four-cylinder (T5); 312-hp, turbocharged and supercharged four-cylinder (T6); and a 400-hp plug-in hybrid with four-cylinder engine and electric motor (T8). According to a review on, “The redesigned XC60 adds new styling, technology and a few exciting safety updates that advance Volvo’s safety technology further along on the road towards autonomous driving.” (Volvo is planning to market self-driving “autonomous” vehicles to the public by 2021 and is considered a leader in this technology.)

The large touchscreen first seen in the XC90 and S90 is available in the XC60 with XC60 insideredesigned screens and graphics. There are also updates to the Volvo On Call mobile app, which has the ability to send navigation directions to the vehicle from a calendar or helping to locate your vehicle after it’s been parked.

A new safety system called Steering Assist has been added for 2018. Steering Assist is used by several of the XC60’s safety systems — including the City Safety system, which helps to avoid collisions with vehicles, pedestrians and other large objects. The blind spot warning system also uses Steering Assist to prevent a lane change that will result in a collision, and the new Oncoming Lane Mitigation systems uses it to help prevent head-on collisions.

Volvo’s Pilot Assist, a semi-autonomous driver assistance system that will handle the steering, acceleration and braking at speeds of up to 80 mph will also be available. This is truly an advancement in safety and technology.

This is also the first Volvo model with a “CleanZone” It removes pollutants and particles from the outside environment to keep the air fresh inside. Now that’s a real differentiator from the competition!

Volvo’s newest luxury sedan vehicle is the S90 and it is available with three different engines and is available as a front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Two of the models are available with an in-line 4-cylinder turbocharged engine and two models are both turbocharged and supercharged. Its contemporary design and beauty rivals any luxury sedan on the market and includes all the top safety features for which Volvo is best known throughout the decades. Their new models are a far cry from the old boxy vehicles, but the consistent reputation remains that Volvo makes perhaps the safest vehicles on the market today. The S90 is a finalist for North American Car of the Year. (Last year it was Volvo’s XC90.)

What is happening with the self-driving vehicle experiments?

Gary Jaffarian updates us on the research and development of self-driving or autonomous vehicles of which Volvo is a leader.

Volvo autonomousThere were international symposia in Germany last month and one in San Francisco in March that brought together designers and engineers of autonomous vehicles. As you know, advanced driver assistance systems and fully automated driving vehicle technology is not new. Since the final meeting of the Eureka Project in Paris in 1994, it’s been clear that fully autonomous self-driving vehicles are set to become a reality, yet 20 years later the final stages of testing, validation and fail-safing pose a significant challenge to the automotive industry.

The rigorousness and thoroughness of the testing processes need to be conducted at an altogether higher level than ever done before to satisfy safety requirements. The IEEE (a professional association of electrical engineers) also held their annual symposium to discuss the advent of driverless vehicles. This undertaking is bringing together leading IT professionals, engineers and automotive manufacturers to collaborate.

I wrote about Volvo’s research with driverless vehicles in 2016, with the premise that driverless vehicles offer a level of safety by eliminating human error in favor of electronics. While there will still be a driver behind the wheel, the technological achievement is amazing and will be a major feat, surpassing in our industry the invention of the automobile.

In June of 2016, Boston was selected by the World Economic Forum (WEF) as a focus-city for policy and pilot development of autonomous vehicles. The first experiment held in Boston earlier this year and monitored by a Cambridge company, NuTonomy Inc., was the first public trip by a self-driving car in Massachusetts, and it concluded — without incident — an hour later. While their CEO said the experiment went perfectly, it was unclear if the engineers in the vehicle had any input on the control of the vehicle.

NuTonomy Inc. launched the pilot program on an industrial park’s 3 miles of roads, using a car guided by artificial intelligence software and fitted with cameras and other sensors, including a laser-based technology that detects nearby objects.

The company, a startup using technology developed at MIT, is also testing its systems as part of a self-driving taxi project on some public roads in Singapore.

According to The Boston Globe, don’t expect to see NuTonomy’s self-driving cars zipping through the Boston anytime soon. NuTonomy will complete 100 miles of test drives at the park in daytime and in good weather before progressing to more difficult nighttime and poor-weather tests.

After another 100 miles under those conditions, the company can request to expand its tests to outside the industrial park — again, first in daytime and in good weather — to the surrounding South Boston Waterfront. NuTonomy said it has tested its cars at night and during light rain and snow at its other locations. In its application, NuTonomy said its self-driving cars “are programmed to prevent any collision or other motion that would create a risk to human life or health.” The company plans to limit speeds to 25 miles per hour.

While the only injury reported in any of the world-wide autonomous driving tests is a sprained wrist, the tests and technology is moving ahead steadily, but slowly. Volvo is one of the leaders in autonomous vehicle testing and is planning to test 100 of their autonomous vehicles in Sweden this year with ordinary drivers and they are seeking volunteers in the United Kingdom to test these vehicles. With Volvo’s focus on safety, they are piloting an S60 model to be autonomous with the same rigorous safety systems that they have in all their models.

Participants in the trial will have to be sober and competent to take over controls at any time. Volvo claims its Drive Me system can handle a range of driving conditions including “smooth commuting to heavy traffic and emergency situations” although its test roads will be without pedestrians, cyclists or on-coming traffic. Volvo has taken a slightly different approach to automated vehicles compared to most car manufacturers and technology companies, including Google. Its first tests were on roads by railways where drivers could join a line of cars that would autonomously match speed and follow the lead train car. Volvo is aiming for a 100% safety record before any of these vehicles are released to the public.

Volvo is also testing autonomous XC90 vehicles this year in Europe. They believe that their first unsupervised autonomous vehicles will be in the market by 2021. “What makes our approach to autonomous driving so unique is that we focus on people – not just on technology,” said Volvo officials.

Based on these experiments and ongoing research, I still don’t expect we will see any autonomous vehicles marketed commercially until sometime between 2021 and 2030. Stay tuned as this is going to be interesting!

Is there such thing as a preventable accident?

Gary Jaffarian says “Yes” to this question, and shares three tips for how drivers can prevent vehicle-related accidents this 4th of July weekend and throughout the summer.

I say a resounding yes to this question. I understand that the word “accident” implies it was not done on purpose. Accidents on the road have the second highest cause of accidental deaths and they are the most preventable! Nearly 34,000 people die in motor vehicle every year. (By the way, poisonings are the highest cause of accidental deaths).

In New England, we are approaching one of the best times of the year. Schools are out, the weather is great and we are kicking off summer with the big 4th of July weekend! I BBQ backyardwant to share 3 tips of how you can prevent accidents this coming weekend and throughout the year:

1. Designated drivers: I know I write about this a lot, but statistics show July 4th weekend can be a tragic time on the roads. We love to celebrate the 4th of July with family, friends, food, and fireworks, but all too often the festivities turn tragic on the nation’s roads. But this iconic American holiday is also one of the deadliest holidays of the year due to drunk-driving crashes, according to the NHTSA. The latest statistics available are from July 4, 2015 holiday weekend whereby 146 people were killed in crashes involving at least one driver or motorcycle operator with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 or higher; and 92 people died in crashes involving at least one driver or motorcycle operator with a BAC of .15 or higher – almost twice the legal limit.

Remember that drinking alcohol in the sun exacerbates dehydration.

I recently passed a very large beer truck on the highway with a billboard-size graphic of a serene beach scene with a bottle of beer in the sand, suggesting you “find the nearest Corona beer posterbeach.” With the long Independence Day weekend upon us, the National Highway Traffic Safety (NHTSA) reminds us that we can prevent accidents by preventing drunk or “buzzed” driving by having a designated driver or sticking to non-alcoholic beverages, which are the best thirst quenchers!

Also remember, this is not just about driving under the influence of alcohol. Have a designated driver to account for the effects of marijuana, opioids and prescription drugs.

2. Don’t text and drive. It can wait and it should wait. Texting while driving remainsTeen texting another cause of accidents that is completely preventable. Cell phones should be hands-free, if used at all. Imagine that 660,000 Americans are talking on cell phones every day while driving! All the new model vehicles we sell at Jaffarian Volvo Toyota are equipped with blue tooth, and most can even read your texts to you! Now that is an important safety measure, that will help reduce the accident rate.

3. Never leave a child or pet in a vehicle. Heatstroke is the leading cause of vehicular non-crash-related deaths for children under 14. In fact, each year, an average of 37 children have died from vehicle heatstroke between 1998-2015. This loss of life is tragic and 100% preventable.dogincar

When the outside temperature is 83 degrees, and your window is down two inches, the temperature inside your car can reach 109 degrees in 15 minutes. The color of your car’s interior can make a difference, too. While it seems like an impossible mistake to make, every parent or caregiver can potentially become distracted, and distractions often fuel this devastating situation. I’ve seen parents run into a store for a few minutes and leave a child in the car while they are sleeping, thinking it’s safe. It is dangerous on many levels. Pets also die in hot vehicles that can be up to 140 degrees inside a vehicle with the windows rolled up or slightly open. No one is immune. If you see a child or pet left in a vehicle on a hot day, call the police. You could save a life.

Every needs water in the hot temperatures to stay hydrated—particularly elderly, children and pets. The above 3 tips are largely common sense, but I hope lives are saved this coming weekend by remembering these three ways you can prevent vehicle-related tragedies. Be safe and remember to hydrate during warm weather. We all need water but especially the elderly, children and pets.

North American automotive consulting firm Capgemini in a 2016 consumer survey said 60 percent would consider buying a vehicle online to avoid dealership pressure. I’m in my 30s and want a car that looks cool and is good for the environment. Any suggestions?

Gary Jaffarian recommends some new concept vehicles for millennials that are sharp, functional and are environmentally-friendly from the past present and even future vehicles on the horizon.

Millennials (also known as the Millennial Generation or Generation Y) are the largest demographic since the baby boomers. There are no precise dates when the generation starts and ends; but most researchers use birth years ranging from the early 1980s to late 1990s or early 2000s, now in their 20s and 30s. Because of their spending power overall, yet limited amount to spend per person based on age, Toyota has been paying a lot of attention to this generation. Toyota is a great match for this generation.

These are the vehicles that are both long-term successes for Toyota or in the works for 2018 that would best meet your needs including vehicles from the past, present and future:


  • Toyota Prius—The Prius continues to be the oldest and highest sales of all-time for a hybrid, with more than 10 million sold worldwide, and is continuing to evolve in to le_eco-frontelectric and hydrogen vehicles. Millennials who want to reduce their carbon footprint, flock to the Prius because of its sporty look combined with its energy-efficiency.
  • Toyota Corolla—which looks similar to the sporty Prius, has been redesigned to include the large Safety Sense package, and includes a new 50th Anniversary edition in some great limited colors. This is one of the most energy-efficient vehicles on the road today. There is an LE Eco version which gets about 40 mpg on the highway.   • Toyota C-HR—This 2018 vehicle was designed for the Millennials. C-HR stands for Coupe-High Rider and the designers say it was meant to combine elements of both aToyota C-HR coupe and an SUV. It sits on 18-inch wheels bringing it higher off the ground. Some think it’s a hatchback, some an SUV. Its rated as 27/31/29 miles per gallon based on city/highway/combination driving. It has a standard 7-inch touch screen and has a tablet-like appearance. The multi-media system includes a USB port. It’s great for tall passengers with a good amount of head and leg room. It comes in basic, upgraded and premium models. (Last time I checked, we had 4 in stock and they are priced starting in the low $20s.) Of course, it includes the Toyota Safety Sense package and comes in traditional and new fun colors in trendy blue and green shades. This new model is great looking and are moving quickly off the lot!


  • Toyota FT-4X—This new concept vehicle is not yet available for purchase, but will be next year. The Toyota FT-4X concept is built on the same global platform as the Prius and C-HR models. It’s not a simple crossover, but an SUV that incorporates theToyota-FT-4X-Concept 60-year tradition of legendary Toyota all-terrain vehicles. It was designed for the tech-saavy younger generation. You can even get it with a built-in GoPro in the side mirror. There’s also a slot for your smartphone.

This exciting vehicle is aimed at nature lovers who love camping and adventure! For example, the interior door handles are detachable and represent water containers, and the interior lights on the ceiling can be dismantled and used as a flashlight. The audio system can also be removed and used in nature. The digital dashboard can also be backed up with a secure smartphone at the top of the dashboard, and thanks to the applications, the smartphone turns into a navigation system. The armrest is also detachable and turns into a sleeping bag! Now this is truly a cool vehicle!

  • Toyota Concept-i was introduced at the 2017 International Consumer Electronics Show. It is a vehicle fitted with artificial intelligence and full of safety features. It looks like something right out of a sci-fi movie! They named its communication/ Concept-i-interface system Yui (similar to Siri or Alexa) and it senses your emotions and may be the pre-cursor to the self-driving vehicle, but let’s you stay in charge. According to Toyota, Yui is a liaison between you, your passengers and your car. Yui, in tandem with artificial intelligence, anticipates your needs and informs the car so that Concept-i can consider and execute that next action accordingly.

Concept-i follows Toyota’s belief that vehicles shouldn’t start with technology—they should start, and end, with the experience of the people who use them. Therefore, Concept-i was built from the inside out, with a focus on making it energetic and approachable. Thanks to Yui, Concept-i will enhance the relationship between car and driver. In the future, we envision you, Yui and the car working together—like teammates. Thanks to the vehicle’s advanced automated driving technologies, people with all levels of ability can enjoy the ride. You’re still in charge of the car. However, through biometric sensors throughout, Concept-i can detect what you’re feeling. That information then gets analyzed by the car’s artificial intelligence. That’s when the automated features kick in. Safety and protection are a major benefit of this relationship. By knowing you better, Concept-i will help to protect you. Can’t wait to see one of these on the market!

Millennials are an important part of Toyota’s customer base and some of their advertising is directed at this younger generation. Do I need to do anything special to prepare for long summer drives?

car overheatingGary Jaffarian explains how to prepare your vehicle with maintenance checks and preparation for comfortable summer driving.

To get ready for summer, Gary Jaffarian recommends you check the following 6 items and carefully choose where you park your vehicle:

1. A/C System—For comfort, the most important aspect of your vehicle is the air-conditioner system. There is nothing worse than a summer drive or being stuck in traffic and the air conditioner system doesn’t work. Now is the time to test your system before it gets too hot. The most common cause of a malfunctioning air conditioner unit is a low level of refrigerant. This could be caused by a leak, loose drive belt or a clogged condenser somewhere in the system. Since modern A/C systems are complicated creatures, it’s best to have a professional check out the problem. Despite what many people think, driving with your air conditioner on is more fuel-efficient than driving with your windows open.

2. Tire Treads—I discuss tires a great deal, I realize, but they are a key to your safety system, and you can prevent a flat or an accident with the proper checks. At Jaffarian Volvo Toyota, we check the tread on your tires at every service visit, including oil changes. Poor tire treads adversely affect your ability to stop within short distances and impair maneuverability, especially on wet roads.

3. Rotate your tires— and be sure to frequently check air pressure. Big temperature swings— such as from the extreme daytime heat to the relative cool overnight— can cause your tires to lose pressure more quickly. This can lead to inferior performance and coolant leaksreduced gas mileage. Be sure to regularly rotate your tires for optimal tire wear. This is something we can do at your service visits .

4. Engine coolant— It may be necessary to add coolant or perform a flush-and-fill. Summer’s heat makes it more difficult for your engine to keep its cool. Make sure your coolant is at the appropriate level.

5. Water Pump— This circulates coolant throughout the engine to prevent overheating. It’s prone to leaks, tears and leaky seals, so this should be checked in summer also.

6. Belts and Hoses—Those need to be checked for evidence of damage (such as cracks, fraying, leakage or swelling). The heat and humidity of summer will only make these conditions worse and may be the cause of a breakdown.

Park in the shade—(or your garage) to preserve the exterior paint and to protect your vehicle’s interior from potential damage caused by the extreme heat in a closed-up vehicle. Where possible, don’t park under trees. Sap from trees is difficult to remove and tree cover can increase the amount of pollen or bugs on the vehicle.
